Top Dressing

Top dressing is a crucial process in revitalising a tired, patchy, or bumpy lawn, or in achieving a high-quality lawn by applying a thin layer of nutrient-rich dressing to the surface. This method promotes the growth of fresh, healthy grass and creates optimal conditions for new grass seed to thrive.

The top dressing mix typically consists of sandy loam or high-quality, well-draining topsoil, combined with sand and well-rotted organic matter. You can either create this mixture yourself or purchase pre-made lawn dressing.

While top dressing can be labour-intensive due to the weight and bulkiness of the material, as well as the need for even distribution.

Benefits of Top Dressing:

  • Grass growth is denser – the formation of new shoots is stimulated and the layer of top dressing promotes the development of runners
  • Minor hollows are removed so that a truer surface is obtained
  • The soil surface is gradually built up – thatch tends to decompose in this layer and drought resistance is improved
  • The water holding capacity of sandy soil is improved
  • Drainage in heavy soil is improved, especially if spiking is carried out as a pre-treatment.
